Iatrophobia

The fear of doctors.

Now, this one I totally get.  I don't fear them because of needles or invasive exams though.  No I fear doctors because, as everyone knows, doctors are time vampires.  A doctors visit has the potential to absorb your whole day.  You have a 1:00 appointment but that doesn't matter because in a doctors office the concept of time only applies to the patients.  Doctors went to medical school which gives them lordship over time and clocks.
My kids were always really afraid of doctors when they were little but that's mostly because the doctors would whisper to us parents and then we'd snatch those tiny little people right up and let the doctor poke and prod them.  I would hate doctors too if I knew that if you took my feet off the ground I would be completely defenseless against needle assaults from practical strangers in white coats who could get my parents to turn on me so easily and help him stab me.

  1. Yep, I get this one too. Partly the time-suck, partly not wanting to admit I need a doctor, and partly not wanting to recognize the effect of age. It took me nearly 24 hours to go to the emergency room with a broken back - and only then because I passed out.
Yet I'll call the vet in a heartbeat for one of my horses or advise a friend/family member to see a doctor.

    1. It took you 24 hrs to go to the ER with a broken back? Are you a Highlander? If my back was broken the neighbors would call 911 before I could I'd be crying so loud.

  2. Doctors are all useless. We can diagnose ourselves just as well, and with 100% less time and money. If whiskey and/or duct tape can't fix it, it can't be fixed.

  3. LOL! My 16-year-old doesn't dislike his doctor, but he still hates shots and doesn't trust us about visits to the MD because he keeps needing more shots. Poor kid!

    1. I don't blame him, shots suck. I fought like hell when I was a kid if someone tried to give me a shot.

  4. I don't mind doctors. Would have gone to med school if it weren't for that pesky chemistry subject. Changed my mind a lot in college. Anyways, I didn't mind shots or needles growing up of what I can remember. However, I will take a shot in the arm far easier than the butt option. I'd rather my bumm is left alone. I'll watch the needle better than handling that humiliating owww again.

    1. The butt is worse than the arm, way worse.

  5. I once was really upset because my doctor was over an hour late for a first thing in the morning appointment. When she came in, however, she looked completely exhausted and explained that she had been up all night (and until just before she came in) with a patient who had attempted suicide the night before. I don't get upset about my doctor being late anymore.

  6. What a terrific theme! And while I don't have a fear of doctors - I do avoid them as much as possible. Cheers!

  7. I always get back at doctors by rearranging items in the exam room as soon as I'm left alone in there. That's right. Search for those tongue depressors. Search for them!!

  9. I used to be afraid of doctors and shots and then I decided it would be silly to be afraid of shots and then join the military where people are going to be shooting at you.
